The in#uence of foot positioning on ankle sprains
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of this study was to examine the in#uence of changes in foot positioning at touch-down on ankle sprain occurrence. Muscle model driven computer simulations of 10 subjects performing the landing phase of a side-shu%e movement were performed. The relative subtalar joint and talocural joint angles at touchdown were varied, and each subject-speci"c simulation was exposed to a set of perturbed #oor conditions. The touchdown subtalar joint angle was not found to have a considerable in#uence on sprain occurrence, while increased touchdown plantar #exion caused increased ankle sprain occurrences. Increased touchdown plantar #exion may be the mechanism which causes ankles with a history of ankle sprains to have an increased susceptibility to subsequent sprains. This "nding may also reveal a mechanism by which taping of a sprained ankle or the application of an ankle brace leads to decreased ankle sprain susceptibility. ( 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Determination of Ligament Strain During High Ankle Sprains due to Excessive External Foot Rotation in Sports
High ankle sprains represent a severe injury in sports. External foot rotation is suspected in these cases, but the mechanism of injury remains unclear. The objective of the current study was to integrate in vitro and in vivo experiments along with computational models based on rigid bone surfaces and deformable ligaments of the ankle to investigate the external foot rotation inju...

متن کاملStudy of functional-performance deficits in athletes with previous ankle sprains
Abstract Background: Despite the importance of functional-performance deficits in athletes with history of ankle sprain few, studies have been carried out in this area. The aim of this research was to study relationship between previous ankle sprains and functional-performance deficits in athletes. Materials and methods: The subjects were 40 professional athletes selected through random sampl...
متن کاملPrimary care of foot and ankle injuries in the athlete.
A thorough knowledge of foot and ankle anatomy is required to allow an accurate and focused examination of the injured athlete. This short review has attempted to educate the treating physician on our approach to foot and ankle injuries commonly seen in athlete. We have tried to elucidate less common injuries that present in similar manner to the more common foot and ankle sprains and strains.
